Passion Fruit Caipirinha

Photo and Text by Cynthia Presser.

Despite not being the most popular of the caipirinhas, passion-fruit caipirinha is my personal favorite. The combination of tart fruits with the cachaça and sugar is really refreshing and passion-fruit has the necessary tartness to make a perfect balanced drink. The seeds are crunchy and add personality to this exotic concoction, but if it they bother your palate, simply strain the drink to enjoy all the taste without the seeds. I keep the seeds in my drink, and I enjoy every bit of it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 small passion fruit or ½ large passion fruit

  • 3 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 shot cachaça

  • 1 cup ice cubes

Directions:

In a working surface, cut passion fruit in half crosswise and scrape the pulp in a glass (preferably a lowball glass). Add sugar and muddle, using a pestle, until sugar and passion fruit are well incorporated. Add cachaça and ice and stir. Serve immediately.

Cook’s Notes:

Adjust passion fruit to taste: add more pulp from an extra passion fruit if you prefer your drink slightly more tart.
